Caring for Waterproof Clothing

Caring for Waterproof Clothing

It is important to properly care for waterproof clothing to ensure it continues to perform for years to come. Over time dirt and residue can build up on your waterproof clothing, affecting the breathability and waterproof efficiency of the garment.

From the factory, waterproof fabrics such as Gore-Tex are treated with a DWR (Durable Water Repellancy) coating. This helps keep the outer layer of fabric from becoming saturated with water and 'wetting out'. Saturated fabrics will reduce the breathability of the fabric. The DWR treatment needs to be refreshed frequently to maintain breathability and performance.

When cleaning waterproof jackets and trousers, it's important you don't use regular washing detergents. Specialist cleaners such as Nikwax Tech Wash or Grangers Performance Wash are ideal. You can also use pure soap flakes, but ensure they don't contain additional chemicals or fabric softeners.

Waterproofs can be washed in a washing machine* but ensure the filler neck of the washing machine doesn't contain any washing powder residue. Alternatively handwash in a sink or clean bucket.

After washing, a DWR treatment should be applied such as Nikwax TX Direct, or Grangers Clothing Repel. This can also be done in a washing machine* or by hand in a sink or bucket. Ensure the garment is properly rinsed after reproofing.

Tumble dry for best results but only if the care label permits. Alternatively hang up to dry.

* Always check specific care instruction for your garment first and recommended cycle according to the care product.
